The Swede wins the British Women’s Open 2021 in cold blood by dominating the difficult final of the Scottish links. She continues to follow in the footsteps of her compatriot Annika Sörenstam.
Suspense until the last hole! In France, golf lovers know better than anywhere else: the final of the Carnoustie links can be the scene of incredible turnarounds. Especially for the one at the top of the ranking…
This Sunday, Anna Nordqvist did not back down. She, whose husband Kevin is from Dundee, was level with Denmark’s Nanna Koerstz Madsen when the last couple played the 18th hole, but she hung on…unlike the other Scandinavian who experienced a cruel ending with an ugly double bogey . at 34, Anna Nordqvist (54th in the world) wins the British Women’s Golf Openthe third major title of his career.
Already a starter in 2009 at the LPGA Championship and in 2017 at Evian, Nordqvist returned a card of 69 on Sunday to finish 12 under par, one less than the English Georgia Hall, the American Lizette Salas and her compatriot Madelene Sagstrom (-11 ), and two fewer than Koerstz Madsen and Australian Minjee Lee (-10), winner of the Amundi Evian Championship at the end of July.
Nordqvist, whose victory was largely due to his third-round score of 65, came out clear on Sunday’s front nine, posting three birdies to cruise to the lead on an increasingly sunny afternoon. After a surprising bogey on 12, the blonde Swede was exceptional, birdieing on 14 to get back down 12, then keeping her cool to succeed Germany’s Sophia Popov, notably making a fantastic last approach on 18.
Following in the footsteps of the illustrious Annika Sörenstam – though still a long way from her ten Major wins – Anna Nordqvist now holds the rare distinction of having won the British Women’s Amateur and Professional Championship, the Smyth Salver and the Women’s Open AIG, equaling the feat achieved by Hall in 2018.
The French Perrine Delacour, author of four solid laps (73 – 71 – 71 – 72), finished in 34th position (-1).
