US Open 2021 champion Emma Raducanu has gone from unknown youngster to tennis superstar in just 12 months. In Madrid, Raducanu took a moment to reflect on how she has changed her life in the space of 12 months.
A year ago, Raducanu was an ordinary 18-year-old girl taking an exam and thinking about which university she should attend. Twelve months later, Raducanu is a tennis star, on his way to winning several Grand Slam tournaments and one day reaching the number one spot in the world.
“It’s funny because I was on my phone and I looked at it and it sent back memories from a year ago today: I took my last math test,” Raducanu was quoted as saying by Tennis365.
I thought about it and thought, “My God, 365 days ago I was sitting in an exam room taking my third exam.” Raducanu went to the training ground after the examination of him.
“That afternoon, after my morning exam, I went to hit some balls because I had to prepare very quickly for the grass season,” Raducanu revealed.
“I hadn’t played tennis in two months. I thought, ‘Wow, I’ve got a few weeks to get fit and play my first WTA in Nottingham.’ The Wimbledon organizers recognized Raducanu’s potential and awarded him a wildcard to the championship.
Emma Raducanu achieved a historic feat
Raducanu made her first notable appearance at Wimbledon last year, where she reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by Ajla Tomljanovic.
Two months later, Raducanu won a total of 10 matches at the US Open to become the first qualifier in tennis history to win a Grand Slam. Raducanu has not had an ideal 2022 season, but it should be noted that she is playing her first full season on the WTA Tour.
