In Japan, the Olympic golf event is scheduled to take place at the Kasumigaseki Country Club course in Saitama, approximately 55km northwest of the Tokyo Olympic site. Date of the events: from July 29 to August 1 for the men’s tournament, from August 4 to 7 for the women’s.

The origins

Golf, which consists of sticking a 42.67mm diameter ball into a hole 108mm more or less from the starting point, is one of the oldest codified sports: its rules were promulgated in 1754 in St Andrews, Scotland. But its origins go back even further, as a form of the game, played in the Netherlands under the name “colf” or “kolven”, is said to have reached the British Isles in the 15th century.

The competition formats date from the second half of the 18th century – the first women’s tournaments were played in the late 19th century – and, like the rules, have evolved relatively little since then. Practiced in the 20th century by British officers, mainly Scottish, deployed in the four corners of the world, golf has developed a lot and today there are some 30,000 courses and 60 million players.

Golf was first included in the Games program in 1900 in Paris and 1904 in St Louis (United States). He then disappeared from the Olympic program until his reinstatement at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Format

There are two main formats of play in golf: stroke play and match play. In the first (stroke play), all strokes played by each player are counted and the tournament is won by the player whose total is the lowest after four rounds of an 18-hole course. In the second format, two players compete in a duel and the holes won are counted, that is, the number of strokes played on each hole, and not the total number of strokes played throughout the course. Depending on the advance taken, these duels do not necessarily reach the end of the 18 holes.

In Tokyo, the two tournaments, men’s and women’s, will be played by strokes, over four rounds of an 18-hole course, the classic format on professional circuits. In the event of a medal tie at the end of the 72 holes, the players will decide by playing a playoff of three additional holes.

60 golfers and 60 golfers were selected according to the world ranking on the night of June 22 for men and June 29 for women. The 15 best players in the world were selected, to which were added the next 45 players in the world ranking with a maximum of 2 players per nation, that is, a total of 4 players maximum for the best nations.

The schedules

For both men and women, the Olympic event will begin the night from Wednesday to Thursday at 00:30 in France, or at 07:30 in Tokyo.

For men, appointment Thursday 28 (live on France Télévisions from 00:30), Friday 29 (00:30), Saturday July 30 (00:30) and Sunday August 1 (00:30) .

the olympic site

The golf tournaments will be played at the Kasumigaseki Country Club, established in 1929 in the city of Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, outside of Tokyo. Its route extends over the Musashino hills, spread over 6,827 meters for men and 6,508 meters for women.
