Organizing a round of the Ladies European Tour in Belgium: the challenge was huge. But here it is! The first edition of the Mithra Ladies Open kicks off this Friday at Golf de Naxhelet, in Wanze. “Initially, the housewarming party was scheduled for 2020, then 2021. But the health crisis, each time, has forced us to postpone the event. This time the party can startsmiles Françoise Jolly, owner-president of the Resort.
The party: the word is not too strong. Because apart from the competition, the idea is, in fact, to attract a large expected audience during the three days. Animations, contests, initiations: everything has been planned to move the ranks. “Golf is becoming more and more fashionable in Belgium, especially among women. We want to break the codes that still make it, in the eyes of some, an elitist and snobbish sport. That’s why admission will be free!
Endowed with 200,000 euros in prizes, the tournament offers a great poster with the presence of some of the best European professional players. In great form in recent weeks and victorious in Bangkok two weeks ago, Manon De Roey will, of course, be the big draw of the tournament. “It would be fantastic to win here in front of my fans”says the Antwerp woman who will share her first two rounds with British legend Laura Davies (58) and young national hopeful Savannah De Bock (16). Three generations together, that doesn’t lack spice!
Opened in 2015, Naxhelet is an authentic Resort located between Namur and Liège. It offers a “championship race”, of course, but also a hotel, a Spa, a gourmet restaurant and a real estate project. All in an eco-responsible and organic environment. No drawing is necessary: the field, designed by Martin Hawtree, has been dressed up to host the event.
Led by the greenkeepers, it will offer a real technical and tactical challenge. “It reminds me a bit of a simple link, since it is open and exposed to the wind” explains the Belgian player Laura González, who returned from the United States especially for the occasion. In short, the show will want to check out Wanze, whether you’re a golf fan or not. On the 17th hole, each birdie will be celebrated with a general round of Ginette beer! To the health of women’s golf.
