Like so many times at a US Open, the best players in the world took on a tough course, testing and challenging every area of the game of golf. However, the favorites quickly moved to the front during the opening laps with the presence of Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm or even Rory McIlroy at the top of the leaderboard.

Ultimately it was Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris who took the lead in the tournament on Sunday. A three-way confrontation then began between these two players and world number 1 Scottie Scheffler. After a thunderous start to the game from the Masters winner with four birdies in his first nine holes, these three players were left in a pocket square.

One of the turning points of the tournament was a 16-meter putt on the 13th hole by the Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick to return to co-leader, when he had started his comeback with a bogey on the 10th and then the 11th. He signed a new birdie on the 15th hole .

Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler missed chances to get back on the scoreboard and went 5-under at the clubhouse. The last game came on the 18th tee with the following scores: Fitzpatrick -6, Zalatoris -5.

The Englishman misses the faceoff in the bunker while his American friend finds the fairway. Matt Fitzpatrick then hits at this point in the tournament, which is surely close to the winning shot, a fallen fairway bunker less than 5m from the pin, leaving him with one putt for the win.

Zalatoris also finds the green a little closer than the Englishman. The two men signed a 2-putt, with Will Zalatoris losing the opportunity to snatch a play-off from him and leaving the Briton the victory.

At 27 years old, Matt Fitzpatrick, Ryder Cup player and multiple winner of the DP World Tour, writes the most beautiful line of his record, he is the winner of the US Open. At the same time, he entered the world top 10, 10th, the best ranking of his career.

Will Zalatoris must be content with a new second place, after the PGA Championship a few weeks ago.

Rory McIlroy finished fifth in the event and took second place in the world rankings from Jon Rahm. The Spaniard will not have played the last lap that he expected. Starting third at -3, he returned a card of 74 (+4) for a 12th place finish.
