“Rafael Nadal is an extraordinary man”

Ons Jabeur, ranked tenth in the world, has called Rafael Nadal a “great inspiration” as he hopes to have a hot run in Madrid and potentially win his first title at the tournament.

Nadal, the best clay court player in tennis history, won five titles in Madrid during his career. Jabeur made his debut in Madrid last year, where he reached the round of 16.

“It’s such an inspiration to see how many times he’s won here, I hope I can win at least one. He’s an incredible man, both on and off the pitch, and I can’t wait to see him play for many more years.” Jabeur told the Madrid tournament website, according to Sportskeeda.

Jabeur on Wimbledon decision

In an interview with Arab News, Jabeur was asked to comment on Wimbledon’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from the competition.

“It is a very difficult decision, I understand what the Ukrainian people are going through and I am totally against the war,” Jabeur told Arab News. “But what they have always told me for so many years is that sports and politics should never be mixed”

Wimbledon revealed that they considered allowing Russian players to play, but only after they had signed some kind of anti-Vladimir Putin form. Wimbledon thought this might put Russian players at risk and therefore decided not to go down that route.

“For me, I don’t think we should mix politics and sports. It is very sad what is happening in the world and one thing I hate in this world is politics.

It is very dirty and we can never have a complete picture of everything. So I hope this situation will be resolved very soon, I don’t know what will happen,” Jabeur added.

“But I know that the Russians and the Belarusians also have families in their country, and I’m not sure they can talk about it. So it’s a very difficult situation for both of them, especially for the Ukrainians.”

And I sincerely hope that this war will end soon and there will be no problems.”
