Wanting to improve his knee, Roger Federer had to leave the court for the last two seasons. The Swiss phenomenon will then have played only 13 official matches last year, to accumulate only 9 wins and 4 losses.
His last appearance on the circuit dates back to the 2021 Wimbledon quarterfinals. A few weeks before the English Championship, the Swiss announced again that he had undergone surgery, for the third time in 18 months in total, after a recurrence of his knee .
The hope of the fans is now to see the former number 1 in the world again to be able to afford one last trip before the “fatal” moment of retirement. The 40-year-old Basel native should therefore return to competition in late summer or early autumn, possibly also for the Laver Cup (which takes place at London’s O2 Arena in late September).
Recently, Roger also announced that he would play in the Basel tournament, on grass, of which he is the record champion. During a lengthy interview with Telegraf, Andrey Rublev, fresh off his victory at the Belgrade tournament, expressed his doubts about the chances of seeing Federer at the top level again.
Rublev spoke about Roger Federer
“Of course Roger Federer will try to play a few more tournaments, but honestly, I think it’s very difficult to come back after so much time off the court,” Rublev admitted.
Rublev also gave his opinion on the debate around the GOAT of men’s tennis, while saying that Nadal and Djokovic “are the best ever” “It’s very interesting!
These two are the best in history, and now in a way they are fighting so that one of them is alone on this throne”, commented the Russian player. “In my opinion, they are both the best of all time.
It is important to see that they continue to enjoy tennis, and we will soon know what to expect.”
