SAITAMA, Aug. 4 (Yonhap) — World No. 2 Ko Jin-young and defending champion Park In-bee squared off Wednesday at the Tokyo Women’s Olympic Golf Tournament, braving scorching conditions to try to stay at the top of the rankings.
Ko shot a 3-under 68 at the Kasumigaseki Country Club in Saitama, north of Tokyo, in the first round, with six birdies and three bogeys. Ko is two strokes behind the leader, the Swedish Madelene Sagstrom.
The American Nelly Korda, number one in the world, is one of the two players with four shots under par. Ko is tied with two others for fourth place.
Park, number three in the world and gold medalist in 2016, made three birdies and bogey on the last hole for a 69, while another South Korean, Kim Se-young, finished with the same score with three birdies and one bogey. They are tied at nine for seventh place.
South Korea’s fourth player on the court, Kim Hyo-joo, scored 70 after recording two birdies and a bogey.
